In recent years, state repression against social movements in Germany has intensified significantly. The Palestine solidarity movement has been particularly affected, as it has been subject to increased repression for years and has been increasingly confronted with restrictions on freedom of assembly and other repressive measures since October 7. These measures include the banning of organizations such as Samidoun and Palestine Solidarity Duisburg, excessive police violence, the banning of the Palestine Congress, bans on demonstrations, house searches, entry and political activity bans, charges and arrests, the threat of job loss and exmatriculation as well as the tightening of asylum law (the list is by no means complete).

This list illustrates the extreme extent of the repression directed specifically against the Palestine solidarity movement. At the same time, it reflects a general trend: the dismantling of democratic rights and freedoms and the considerable restriction of the scope of action for protest movements that displease the political decision-makers.

Since the introduction of the new police laws in 2019, the situation has become increasingly tense and is currently experiencing a general escalation. The police can use vague terms such as “imminent danger”, “imminent terrorist threat” or even “threatening person” to take preventive action against individuals and groups without concrete grounds for suspicion. Such constructions of dangerous situations further advance the militarization of the police and legitimize far-reaching encroachments on fundamental rights.

Guest speaker Roland Meister, a lawyer known for his commitment to the defense of politically persecuted people, will share his expertise and experience. He will discuss the current legal and political framework and describe specific cases in which the new police powers have been used against activists and demonstrators.

Join us to discuss the increasing state repression and the dismantling of already modest democratic rights in Germany.
